Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:14-23
In 1 Samuel 16, David, a young musician, is invited into Saul’s royal court. He is recruited on account of his skill, but the gig comes with an added layer of complexity – an evil spirit that is tormenting King Saul! This story provides a foundation for our association of David with the book of Psalms. It also links David with a tradition of exorcism within ancient Jewish literature. How might we understand the relationship between David, Saul, and the forces of darkness described in this passage? How might it help us reflect on the role of poetry and music in our own lives and in our communities of faith?
