“I couldn’t believe it” – an update with Maxym Oliferovski

On February 28th, MCC was able to interview Maxym about his experiences in Ukraine since the invasion began on February 24th. He is a church planter and MCC partner in Zaporizhzhia. At the time of interview, Max was less than 100km from the front lines of the conflict. He and his wife have chosen to stay where they are so they can help their neighbours with things like food and water.

Below is a short video from Maxym:

A message from Anna Vogt, Co-Director, MCC Canada Peace & Justice Officer:

“Many of you have asked some very good questions like—what does MCC’s peacebuilding work look like in the midst of violent conflict? What does advocacy for peace look like in a moment like this? For many of us, it’s hard to imagine what it’s like for a community to embody a peace perspective in a situation like this.

To help us answer some of these questions, I’m excited to share that I’ll be participating in a “virtual visit” next week.

This special, hour-long session will take place next Wednesday (March 16) and will include stories from Ukraine and DPRK (North Korea) about what it looks like to try and build peace during times of violence or conflict. I’ll be sharing some of my own experiences working in Colombia and what we can learn from faith communities about peacebuilding and the role of advocacy.

I’d love it if you could join us. The registration link is here.”
